President Obama will give a speech on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt. The purpose of the speech is to make a clean break from the rhetoric of the Bush era and reset relations with the Muslim World. The president made it clear that the United States is not at war with Islam and it never will be. Another purpose of the speech is open a dialogue between the United States and the Muslim World. The expectations in Cairo are building and perhaps they are building too high. The president admits that one speech cannot fix everything and that there is no “magic bullet” to solve the problems.
Muslims and Arabs are waiting to hear what President Obama has to say about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Mamoun Fandy, a Middle East expert, says that Muslims want more than talk; they want action. They need to know that he is serious about solving the Arab-Israeli conflict, not just talk about it. The president for his part has been taking a hard line with Israel and wants a two party solution. He has expressed the need to alleviate some of what the Palestinians are going through. The president believes that progress can be made if both parties can come to agreement on settlements and the use of violence.
